Pool: An incredible skill

Pool: An incredible skill

Nicholas Gann Wednesday, March 3, 2010 Posted under Pool, Cues, Hobbies.
As a young child my mother knew quite a few different bar owners around the county. This led me to pool.
Because she knew them I would be allowed to come in: through the back door of course!

I met many old men, all of which were cool to talk to as a young man myself. And by young man I mean around 10. I was able to absorb the scene and possibilities of a hustler.

When most kids watched Sesame Street, I watched ESPN for the pool competitions and trick shots at 3am.

The game is incredible and the technology pretty limited. You have, on a pro table, pockets only a few centimeters larger than the ball and a stick. It takes precision, but done well... looks effortless.

So up until I was about 16 I was a pretty great pool player, but as the hustler or pro adage goes, you only become great by playing people better than you. And high school and college made me numb, so furthering my abilities wasn't at the forefront of my mind.

Anyhow now I am bartending and I spend a lot of time paying attention to peoples shots, and have realized when I really focus it's extremely easy for me to see good shots and bad ones. It's like my eyes can tell exactly what needs to happen.

So I am again picking up pool, and getting my skill back with relative ease. But I am tired of using house sticks. So i set out on a journey to purchase my own. But I like my stick to have weight, around 20oz+ is where I like it.

I was talking to my better half and she informed me her dad used to play pool. Her dad was an eccentric guy like myself, and when he bought something or made it, wanted it to be the best. So you can see where $600 dollars for a good cue goes. Anyhow he had one, and today it looks like I will inherit it.

I hope I can do it justice. Play the hustle game for a little while.

The stick I want some day though, is titanium 23oz and flat black.
